Traffic related air quality monitoring began in Restormel in 2002 throughout St Austell and Fowey. Since then a more extensive monitoring programme has been ongoing in St Austell, in particular along the Holmbush bypass and throughout the town centre.
Some congested roads in the St Austell area currently exceed the Government's NAQS objectives. Air quality monitoring also provides a good baseline for the proposed redevelopment of the town centre.

Monitoring for particulate matter (PM10) in the china clay district was first undertaken in 1997. At present, continuous PM10 monitoring is carried out in the St Stephen area to assess the impact of the extension to the Scarcewater Tip.
